October Arrivals

Common Coot

Hyoko, Niigata, Japan

October 21, 2017

Not so cold yet, but pretty dull. I'm happy to see all the new arrivals at Hyoko. Some Tundra Swans, but no Whoopers yet.

The usual assortment of common ducks have made their way from the continent in the north. There'll be many more to come in the weeks ahead. Hope they travel well with the typhoon coming our way.

I thought I'd lead off with a Common Coot. They're here for summer too, but I usually look past them. Quite a nice face really.

Bewick's Swan

Post Edit: Stu from Hakodate Birding correctly corrected me as identifying the swans in this post as Bewick's Swans. I had incorrectly labelled them as Whoopers. There are usually two species of swans at Hyoko in the winter; Whooper Swan and Bewick's Swan. As Whoopers seem to outnumber the Bewick's most years I usually assume that everything is a Whooper. Thanks for keeping me on my toes, Stu.

Billy and I enjoyed a few hours at Hyoko this morning. I'm keen to brainwash him about birds. The weather was beautiful and clear. I usually wait and visit Hyoko when it is grey and dull in the midst of winter. We found a few arrivals for winter and I enjoyed getting some portraits in nice light. We also saw one peregrine and a young goshawk which stirred up the ducks at the back of the lake.

I took a number of similar portraits but I like looking at them. They are all different.

Christmas Mixed Ducks

Thank you for visiting this blog for another year. I'm very grateful for your visits and comments. I know it's a busy time of the year but I hope you can have a bit of time to sit down with a quiet beer and enjoy these mixed ducks.....

Autumn around the Wetlands

Northern Goshawk

Fukushimagata, Niigata, Japan

November 5, 2012

Mr Honma and I checked out two wetland areas around Niigata today. First we went to Fukushimagata and were treated by this young goshawk which landed on a post behind the bird observatory for a few moments. She looked around just for a bit before departing and leaving us with a warm glow to the start off the day.

Secondly, we went to Hyoko and found a variety of ducks and Whooper Swans which have safely made it and which are likely to stay for the winter months.
